A year of injustice
June 1, 2016
The wheels of the Philippine justice system grind especially slow in the case of political detainees. It has been a year since National Democratic Front consultant Adelberto Silva, Sharon Cabusao, and Isidro de Lima have been illegally arrested in Cavite, yet there is no resolution in sight.
In the dead of the night, Silva, Cabusao, and de Lima were abducted in their rented home on June 1 last year. Members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of the Philippine National Police (CIDG-PNP) then planted guns and explosives to make the only charge (illegal possession of firearms) against Cabusao and de Lima stick. In addition, Silva is holder of a JASIG documentation of identification. This means that he should not have been arrested. Cabusao and de Lima should not have been arrested either, since companions of JASIG documentation of identification holders are also exempt.
We are calling on President-Elect Rodrigo Duterte to fulfill his promise to free all political prisoners, and grant them amnesty. Earlier this year, Eduardo “Eddik” Serrano died before all the fabricated charges against him were dismissed. We hope that Silva, Cabusao, and de Lima will not suffer the same fate, being ill, and given the miserable conditions inside prison.
