NEWS: Happy Birth Anniversary, Ka Bel!*
June 3, 2013
“There are those who want to become politicians, and those who are already politicians and want to extend their term in public office. Ka Bel’s legacy should serve as a reminder and inspiration to those who seek public office. To live simply and selflessly, and serve tirelessly: this was Ka Bel’s dictum, which guided him as a public servant.”
With these words, Ofel Beltran-Balleta, Executive Director of the Crispin B. Beltran Resource Center, addressed the crowd that gathered in commemoration of the 80th birthday of the well-known and beloved labor leader and patriot, the late Crispin “Ka Bel” Beltran.
The event was on January 7 at the Plaze Miranda. Around 100 members attended from the Center, the Kilusang Mayo Uno, and Anakpawis Partylist. Senatorial candidate Teddy Casiño, Ka Osang (Ka Bel’s widow), and Mayor Alfredo Lim, Mayor of the City of Manila also graced the event.
Progressive partylists under the Makabayan coalition also gave their messages. Teddy Casiño, running in the Senatorial eletions under the Makabayan coalition, said: “Si Ka Bel ang isa sa mga tunay na lingkod ng mamamayan. Inialay niya ang kanyang buhay sa paglilingkod sa bayan – mula sa pagdepensa sa bansa mula sa mga Hapon, hanggang sa pakikibaka sa lansangan at Kongreso. Hindi niya tinalikuran o pinabayaan ang interes ng mas nakararami.” (Ka Bel is one of those people you can say truly served the people. He offered his life to serve our countrymen- from defending our country from the Japanese, to struggling in the streets and Congress. He never turned his back, nor abandoned the interests of the majority.)
He continued, “It is this quality that should be emulated by incumbent and aspiring politicians. The next elections should produce more public servants like Ka Bel whose sole priority is the interest of our countrymen.”
The musical band of the Manila City Government played traditional music during the event.
