June 4, 2013
As part of its commitment to contribute to the advancement of organizing among workers in Special Economic Zones (SEZs), the Crispin B. Beltran Resource Center (CBBRC) brought the second leg of its lecture series to workers in Cavite, home to numerous special economic zones in the country.
Some 50 workers, church-leaders and labor organizers attended the said lecture held at the St. Paul Parish Pastoral Center in Dasmarinas last October 14. The activity was co-hosted by the Solidarity of Cavite Workers and the Church People-Workers Solidarity Cavite (CWS-Cavite).
Helen Simplina and Roneil Villegas of the CBBRC and Jenny Guste from IBON Databank’s People’s Education Resource Center, discussed the impact of SEZs on the country’s economy, ecozone workers and the right to freedom of association.
After the discussion, representatives from the Solidarity of Cavite Workers (SCW) and organizations inside the Cavite Export Processing Zone shared their stories inside the enclaves, providing concrete evidence of the sad plight of workers in the zones, as well as their continuing efforts to become organized despite the harsh regime of repression.
